About the project
The interactive VR application authentically reconstructs a Roman centuria, offering users a fully immersive experience of a Roman soldier’s life. The application provides a realistic depiction of daily life within a military unit of the Roman Empire, featuring meticulously modeled spaces for ten contubernia (sleeping quarters for eight soldiers each) and a shared cooking area (culina), all surrounded by a training ground and wooden palisades.
All 3D models are based on museum references, including weapons, armor, utensils, and furniture. Users can explore the environment through physical movement or teleportation, examine objects up close, and participate in interactive activities such as sword training, bringing the historical setting to life in an educational and visually captivating way.
Goals
- Recreate an authentic Roman centuria building in virtual reality for educational and museum use
- Provide a fully immersive, interactive experience of Roman military life using cutting-edge VR technology
- Combine accurate historical reconstruction with engaging interactive storytelling
- Enable users to explore, interact with, and learn from the reconstructed environment intuitively
Solutions
- VR Environment Design Developed a highly detailed 3D model of a Roman centuria, including ten contubernia (barracks for eight soldiers each), a shared kitchen area (culina), and surrounding training grounds enclosed by wooden palisades.
- 3D Modeling and Historical Accuracy Created all 3D assets – armor, weapons, furniture, and utensils – using museum-provided references to ensure authenticity and educational value.
- Immersive Interaction Implemented full movement, object manipulation, and teleportation systems with Meta Quest 3 controllers. Users can physically explore, pick up and inspect artifacts, and participate in sword training simulations.
- VR Application Development Built the application in Unity, optimizing for smooth performance and visual fidelity on Meta Quest 3 standalone hardware.
- Engaging Educational Experience Integrated interactive content and gameplay elements that bring the Roman military environment to life, making learning historically accurate, visually rich, and deeply engaging.
