About the project
Explora Vižula! is a visitor centre in Medulin dedicated to the Roman heritage of the Vižula peninsula and Medulin Bay. It connects archaeological discoveries with stories of imperial intrigue, everyday life, and ancient traditions through physical exhibits and interactive multimedia.
Fragment developed a wide range of digital experiences for the centre and the surrounding archaeological site. Our work spanned custom touchscreen applications, educational games, a virtual jewellery mirror, an animated projection book, immersive 3D exploration, and multilingual audio guides. Working from the interpretation concept and archaeological materials, we transformed historical content into experiences visitors can navigate, shape, and share.
Goals
- Make archaeological heritage engaging through intuitive interaction and storytelling
- Connect physical exhibits with digital experiences and personalised takeaways
- Encourage learning through exploration, choices, and play
- Extend the experience beyond the centre through location-aware audio and virtual exploration
Solutions
- Interactive Maps & Storytelling Designed and developed a touchscreen map covering 17 archaeological sites, alongside a multimedia gallery introducing the story of Crispus through photographs, text, and video.
- Virtual Jewellery Mirror Built a virtual try-on experience that overlays Roman jewellery onto visitors’ live reflections, with branded photo souvenirs available through QR codes or email.
- Roman Food & Cooking Games Developed interactive applications tracing ingredients to their sources across Medulin Bay and inviting visitors to prepare authentic Roman dishes through drag-and-drop gameplay.
- Interactive Projection Book Created a physical book brought to life by projected animations and text. Page-turn detection synchronises the content, guiding visitors from food production and preparation to a Roman banquet.
- 3D Scanning & Shared Virtual Exploration Captured the archaeological site using Gaussian splatting and developed a multiplayer virtual experience, enabling visitors to explore in first person, communicate, and collaborate within the same digital space.
- Archaeological Films & Reconstructions Combined archival footage, photography, and existing 3D visualisations into films connecting present-day remains with reconstructions of 16 key locations across Roman Vižula.
- Audio Guides & Ambient Sound Produced ambient music and professional narration in Croatian, English, Italian, and German. Developed a web application offering QR-accessible storytelling and archaeological audio guides, with GPS-triggered stories for exploring the site.
